The flats have been used for salt production since Roman times and still provide salt for export worldwide. The salt water lakes absorb water from the atmosphere and create a special microclimate which is widely regarded to be beneficial for sufferers of rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory problems. There are mud baths and various health treatments available locally - and you don't have to be unwell to benefit from them!
